Nigeria Hopes to Boost Lending with Three Credit Bureaus: Credit Registry, Credit Reference Company, and XDS Credit Bureau

Credit BureauNigeria is establishing credit bureaux which should help stimulate wider lending by banks to individuals and small businesses, seen as key to the emergence of a middle class in sub-Saharan Africa’s number two economy.

Three credit bureaux — two already licensed and a third still awaiting approval — are collating information on the status of borrowers in Africa’s most populous nation, which they hope will enable banks to make better lending decisions.

Better financial services regulation is one of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s top priorities following the $2.6 billion bailout last month of five banks whose reckless lending left them so weakly capitalized that they posed a systemic risk.

Much of that lending was to stock market speculators and fuel marketers, essentially a bet on the price of oil, rather than to the real economy — the productive private sector and salaried individuals looking to make big-ticket purchases. Read the rest of this entry »

Why the Nigerian Banks Stay Optimistic

Naira

Analysts at Renaissance Capital call it the numbers game in Africa’s biggest market with a population of 150 million and note that Nigerians are still spending. One barometer, the sales of first-class and business-class air tickets on flights between Lagos and Europe, indicates the elite is awash with cash. More contentiously, Renaissance predicts that Nigeria’s gross domestic product will hit $308 billion in 2011; the IMF’s projection for South Africa is $262 billion.

Oil, gas, and Africa’s biggest market keep the investors interested despite the increasingly desperate politics in Abuja ahead of the 2011 elections.

After six weeks of billion dollar bailouts, high-level sackings, and the arraigning in court of five top executives, Nigeria’s financial sector is still robust enough to prompt paeans of praise from banks such as Goldman Sachs, Renaissance Capital and Standard Chartered. Not far behind in their pursuit of Nigerian business are South African banks such as Standard, Absa (now controlled by Britain’s Barclays Bank) and FirstRand – all of which are looking at buying stakes in troubled Nigerian banks, such as Intercontinental, Union, and Oceanic. IBM Introduces New Netbook Software in Africa to Bridge the Digital Divide

IBMIBM and Canonical are introducing a new, flexible personal computing software package for netbooks and other thin client devices to help businesses in Africa bridge the digital divide by leapfrogging traditional PCs and proprietary software. This is the first cloud and on-premise-based Linux netbook software package offered by IBM and Canonical, the companies announced recently.

As part of IBM’s Smart Work Initiative, the new package targets the rising popularity of low-cost netbooks to make IBM’s industrial-strength software affordable to new, mass audiences in Africa. Businesses that could not afford traditional PCs for all employees can now use thin client devices and low-cost software to enable all workers to work smarter anywhere, regardless of the level of communications infrastructure.

The companies said the software is now available across Africa and is being piloted for other emerging and growth markets worldwide. The solution includes open standards-based email, word processing, spreadsheets, unified communication, social networking, and other software for any laptop, netbook, or a variety of mobile devices. Nigerian-Owned Main One Cable Will Land in Five Places in Africa; Mainstreet Technologies Makes Alliance with Tata for European Connections

Main One Cable

Main One Cable

Nigerian-owned Mainstreet Technologies said this week that the Main One Cable is on schedule to be operational by June 2010 and that the building of landing stations has started in Ghana, Nigeria and Portugal.

Also, there will be three other landing station points in Africa with landing station partners to be announced in 2010.

In early September, Globacom announced that the much-delayed Glo-1 cable had landed in Lagos.

The telecommunications industry in Nigeria has practically given up on Glo-1, given that the cable is not yet able to provide access to its potential customers.

Meanwhile Main One seems to be making steady progress in becoming the second competitive cable in West Africa by June 2010.

According to Main One’s Commercial Director Bernard Logan, it is “80% through production” of the fibre, has “started its first lay in Ghana” and is building three landing stations in Ghana, Nigeria, and Portugal. Read the rest of this entry »
