Maryam Babangida, Former First Lady of Nigeria and Wife of Ibrahim Babangida
The former chairperson of the Better Life for Rural Women during her husband’s years in office, had been hospitalized for ovarian cancer at the UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles.
Mrs. Babaginda’s condition worsened about six months ago after she attended the wedding of Umaru Yar’Adua’s daughter, Nafisat, who married the 54 -year old governor of Bauchi State.
General Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria’s retired head of state, was granted a US visa on compassionate grounds to be at the bedside of his wife, till her death.

Oh! my God, Maryam, you will surely be missed. You were such a trend-setter in the fashion world. I was a young girl when my sister would stay up to see you on tv and draw up styles worn by you to sew for her next outing. In the midst of all the storm that surrounded your husband’s regime, you exuded nothing but CALM about you. You were a true gem! Sleep on sister.

What a great loss. You were such a beautiful woman, and very graceful. You brought elegance to Nigerian women, and I was proud to have had you as my First Lady. Unfortunately, I never heard you were sick, I would have had you in my prayers. You will surely be missed. I pray God to grant your family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. And may your soul rest in perfect peace.
