The African Development Bank (AfDB) will lend Kenya KES 31 billion (USD 420 million) to finance the long-mooted Lake Turkhana wind power project designed to add 300MW of wind power to the Kenyan national grid by 2012.
Kenya needs to invest at least $475 million a year over the next decade if it is to meet the electricity needs dictated by its Vision 2030 development plan. Lake Turkhana is in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District near the border with Ethiopia.
“The project is a low-cost, clean, and renewable energy venture that will help diversify Kenya’s energy source and substitute diesel-based generation,” says Hela Cheikhrouhou, the AfDB’s Manager, Infrastructure Division. “It is a good demonstration of a public-private partnership for concurrent development of the transmission line.” Read the rest of this entry »
