Millicom Ghana (Tigo) Sells 750 Towers to Helios Towers Ghana (HTG)

TigoMillicom Ghana (trading as Tigo) has agreed to sell approximately 750 towers to Helios Towers Ghana (HTG), a direct subsidiary of Helios Towers Africa. As a result of the transaction, Tigo Ghana will retain a minority interest in Helios Towers Ghana (HTG).

Additionally, Tigo Ghana and Helios Towers have entered into a long term leasing agreement where Helios Towers will provide Tigo Ghana with wireless communications towers, including a build-to-suit agreement to support the company’s wireless networks. Helios Towers will seek similar agreements with other operators in Ghana. The transaction is expected to create savings in both capital and operating expenditure for Tigo Ghana. Nigeria to Mandate SIM Card Registration

SIM CardNigeria is to start requiring ownership details of prepaid SIM cards to be registered with network operators in 2010.

The registration process will start in March and will last six months. SIM cards that are not registered after then will be shut out of the mobile networks.

The Head of Consumer Affairs at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Lolia Emakpore said “The SIM card registration is in line with complaints that the commission had gotten that mobile phones are used to aid crimes and government has instructed the commission to adopt a mode to help stop crime.” Read the rest of this entry »

VIDEO: CNBC Interview with Funke Opeke, CEO, Main One Cable; Main One Cable is the Second Competitive Cable Planned to Give Broadband Access to West Africa by 2010

Nigerian-owned Mainstreet Technologies’ Main One Cable will connect countries in Africa to those in Europe, becoming the second competitive cable (after the Glo-1 Cable) in West Africa by June 2010.

The Main One Cable Company has concluded the shore-end laying of its undersea fibre optic cables in Lagos, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana respectively. The shore-end cable laying is a critical intermediary procedure to install the undersea cables on the shores of countries in which the cable system is expected to berth.This in preparation for the end-to-end laying of the full stretch of the fibre optic cable from its origin in Portugal.

The Main One Cable will land in five places in Africa, including Nigeria and Ghana.

Zain Outsources Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda Mobile Network Operations to Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN)

ZainZain Group has awarded Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) a five-year outsourcing contract to manage and upgrade its mobile networks in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The contract includes the management of over 3,000 multi-vendor cellular sites, and also includes the implementation of NSN’s ‘Energy Solutions’ to reduce operating costs and power consumption, as well as implementing optimization services and deploying mobile soft switching and subscriber data management solutions.

NSN will take over complete responsibility for network operations, allowing Zain to focus on other activities core to its business, according to a press release. As part of the agreement, approximately 350 Zain employees across the three East African countries will be transferred to NSN.

Chris Gabriel, CEO of Zain Africa, said he was confident that the outsourcing agreement will have a far reaching impact on the company and its customers. Read the rest of this entry »

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has declared that Lagos State’s Global Positioning System (GPS) and Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) have been successfully completed and will soon go live.

GPS is a satellite-based radio navigation system, which allows users to determine their location anywhere in the world at any time of the day.

CORS operates continuously from a permanent and stable location to track down GPS and Global Navigation Satellite (GNS) contact points; receives and stores the data; removes errors and transmits the enhanced satellite data to users in real time. Read the rest of this entry »

National Bank of Rwanda, Rwanda’s Central Bank, Agrees to MTN Rwanda’s ‘Mobile Money’ Service

National Bank of RwandaThe National Bank of Rwanda (NBR) will regulate the new mobile money transfer system that will soon be introduced by MTN Rwanda, the Central Bank Governor Francois Kanimba said.

Francois Kanimba said MTN has approached the National Bank of Rwanda and that the bank has issued MTN a license of operation based on MYN satisfying the operations criteria.

“It is important that this system be regulated because it is for the public interest and there is need to safeguard public interest,” explained Kanimba. The new system will be regulated through the laws governing the payment service providers and the payment system laws.

However, the timeframe in which this will start operations is not yet known as MTN is still working on the project which is expected to commence in the near future. The new service will help MTN subscribers transfer money between each other. Read the rest of this entry »

Telkom Kenya Raises Stakes in Data Market with KSh1 per MB Plan

Telkom KenyaTelkom Kenya on Wednesday revised its Internet charges downwards, raising the stakes in the battle for control of the data market which is expected to be the next frontier of revenue growth for telecoms firms. Subscribers will pay KSh1 per megabyte (MB), one of the lowest Internet tariffs currently on offer from a telecom firm.

Previously, Telkom Kenya charged from KSh2 or more per MB depending on the Internet bundle a customer opted for. The KSh1 per MB rate will apply for buyers of the 4 gigabyte (GB) bundle which will be priced at KSh3,900. Read the rest of this entry »

Brymedia West Africa Bids to Build Overland Fiber Cable (OFC) from Nigeria to Tunisia; Telecom Italia Indicates Interest in Landing Cable on Mainland Europe

Fiber Optic CableBrymedia West Africa, one of the firms bidding to take-over Nigeria’s NITEL and MTel is planning to build an overland fiber cable (OFC) from the Nigerian state of Katsina through to Tunisia.

The source said the overland fiber cable would pass through two countries instead of 13 countries. This will be achieved with the aid of tails to be laid into land-locked countries, such as Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

Sources close to the project said that Telecom Italia, one of the biggest operators in Europe, has already indicated interest to land the overland fiber cable into mainland Europe.

The sources further disclosed that the proposed cable would outperform existing cables, like the SAT-3, and the upcoming Glo-1. The overland fiber cable is estimated to be half as expensive as SAT-3 or Glo-1, allowing savings to be passed on to customers via lower tariffs. Read the rest of this entry »

Emerging Markets Offer Best Opportunity in Mobile Business Market

Mobile BroadbandBusiness customers offer between 20% and 80% higher Average Return per User (ARPU) than the average mobile consumer does in emerging markets, although business customers still constitute a small portion of the mobile market.

Additionally, mobile business customer revenues will grow over the next five years from one to four percentage points more than the overall mobile services market.

However, one of the most important statistics from analysis of the mobile business customer in emerging markets is that about 72% of all mobile business customers are self-employed or work in businesses of fewer than 100 employees.
