Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Opens Fresh Bidding for WiMAX 2.3GHz Spectrum

WiMAXThe Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has received board approval to open fresh licensing for spectrum in the WiMAX 2.3GHz frequency band, after the previous process was declared void.

Earlier this month, presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi released an official statement saying: ‘Having carefully reviewed official reports and representations from stakeholders, and after availing himself of competent advice on the recent licensing of the 2.3GHz spectrum band, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has come to the conclusion that the letters and spirit of the stipulated rules and guidelines were not adequately complied with.’

Mobitel, Spectranet and fixed-wireless operator Multi-Links had emerged as winners out of 41 applicants for the four slots in the 2.3GHz band after each of them paid NGN1.368 billion (USD9.33 million) in May 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

Nigeria to Re-Auction WiMAX Licenses

WiMAXNigeria’s telecommunications regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has been ordered to cancel the recent WiMAX licenses and rerun the tender process. The decision came from the President’s office following several months of controversy over how the licenses were awarded.

“In furtherance of the Federal Government’s desire to assure all prospective investors of its commitment to the observance of due process and a level playing field, President Yar’Adua today directed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) should initiate a fresh process for the award of the 2.3 GHz spectrum band licences,” the presidential adviser said.

While the NCC said the earlier tender process had been open and fair, this was disputed by the Minister of Information and Communication, Professor Dora Akunyili. She had accused the NCC of also imposing unreasonably short timeframes for the payment of license fees. Read the rest of this entry »

Etisalat Nigeria Passes One Million Subscriber Mark (+ Market Shares of Telecommunications Companies in Nigeria)

According to the CEO, Steven Evans, “The swift and steady growth in our subscriber numbers is an evidence of the acceptance we have enjoyed from our customers and the superior service quality we offer. We are delighted to have been able to hit such a figure under a year of commercial operations despite our position as the fifth entrant into the dynamic Nigerian telecoms market”.
