Phillips Oduoza, MD/CEO Designate, United Bank for Africa (UBA)

The Board of United Bank for Africa Plc has announced the appointment of Mr. Phillips Oduoza as Group Chief Executive Designate of UBA.

Phillips Oduoza has over 22 years experience in Banking and Financial Services spanning Banking Operations, Relationship Management, Credit/Marketing, Technology Implementation, Risk Management, Lean Banking Methods, and Brand Management.

Prior to this appointment, Phillips Oduoza was the Bank’s Deputy Managing Director overseeing its operations in the South, which is the UBA Group’s largest strategic business group.

He will commence as the Group Chief Executive of the Bank on August 1, 2010. In the interim, Mr Oduoza will work in tandem with Mr. Tony Elumelu, current Group Chief Executive of UBA to ensure that the transition is seamless. Read the rest of this entry »

USA-Nigeria Direct Flight: Arik Air Launches Services between Lagos and New York JFK

Arik AirArik Air has announced that it would commence flights between Lagos and New York (JFK) beginning on Sunday, 29 November 2009.

The new route will be Arik Air’s third international service outside of the West Africa region, following the commencement of daily flights to London Heathrow in December 2008 and to Johannesburg, South Africa, in June 2009.

The new Lagos – New York (JFK) service will operate three times a week with outbound flights departing Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, while inbound flights will depart New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (Terminal 4) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

In announcing the new international service, Arik Air’s Managing Director, Mr. Jason Holt said: “Arik Air’s new non-stop flights between Lagos and New York will be the airline’s first transatlantic service. They will also be the first direct flights between Nigeria and the United States to be operated by a Nigerian airline in the last decade. Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) CEO Ndukwe Advocates “Fiber Without Borders” for Africa

Fiber Optic CablesErnest Ndukwe, telecommunications engineer and current Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has advocated the concept of “Fibre Without Borders (FWB) as a panacea for achieving a potential African telecommunications revolution, in terms of seamless telecommunications connectivity as well as quick and affordable broadband access to the citizenry.

Ernest Ndukwe who put forward this idea during a special press conference at the National Telecom Development series in Lagos said the idea of fiber optic networks crisscrossing the African continent, without constraints of geography and politics, is the type of initiative that would benefit the continent immeasurably. “In talking about removing barriers created by geography and politics, I will also advocate encouraging cross border fiber optic links as the platform for the next move in Africa and encourage what I call ‘Fibre without Borders,’” he said. Africell Holding SAL Acquires Millicom Sierra Leone

AfricellAfricell Holding SAL, a member of Lintel group, and Millicom International Cellular SA (”Millicom”) (Nasdaq Stock Market: MICC and Stockholmsbörsen: MIC) yesterday (28th July 2009) signed an agreement regarding the acquisition of Millicom (SL) Limited, Millicom’s GSM operations in Sierra Leone. Completion of the transaction is subject to certain regulatory approvals and procedures.

Africell Holding SAL, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Africell (Sierra Leone) Limited, has been operating in Sierra Leone since 2005 and is the leading mobile operator in Sierra Leone. Doing Business in Africa Getting Easier, says World Bank/International Finance Corporation (IFC)

Doing Business 2009Botswana led a record year for African reformers making it easier to do business, with 28 countries completing 58 improvements

Botswana was one of the world’s top three reformers of business regulations, according to “Doing Business 2009″, an annual report published by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Ghana was judged the best place to do business in West Africa for the second year in a row. Senegal has made it easier to start a business, register property, and trade across borders.

Burkina Faso introduced a new labor code and reforms for registering property, dealing with construction permits, and paying taxes. Botswana has cut the time to start a business, facilitated trade, and strengthened investor protections. Read the rest of this entry »
