Mobile Money in Emerging Markets – Still Fragile but Ready to Become Mass-Market

Mobile MoneyMobile money could reach a one-third penetration rate within 5 years, says a new report from Ovum.

The report finds the mobile money market is still in its infancy, yet it has the potential to become a mass-market service. However, much will hinge on how well the industry addresses various market barriers, and its ability to nurture user demand with clear, simple, and attractive propositions.

The mobile money market has accelerated in the last two years in emerging markets. Chairman King recently reported that mobile financial services in the developing world could be worth $5 billion by 2012

“The success of Vodafone’s Kenya subsidiary Safaricom with its mobile money service M-Pesa has underlined the potential for mobile money services,” says Angel Dobardziev, Emerging Markets Practice Leader and co-author of the report. Ghanaian Politicians Deny Taking Bribes for Approving Vodafone Deal

Politicians in Ghana have been denying claims that they accepted “incentives” to vote in favour of a deal that resulted in Vodafone buying a 70% stake in the local Ghana Telecom last July. The purchase was controversial at the time and opposed by various pressure groups.

VodafoneVodafone paid USD $900 million for the stake, which valued the company at approximately USD $1.3 billion. The Government of Ghana will retain a 30% stake in the company.

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Mr Appiah-Ofori, told Joy News that his colleagues in the last parliament each received $5,000 for voting for the Vodafone deal. According to the NPP MP, the money came from the Office of the President and was dished out to the MP’s by former Chief of Staff, Mr. Kwadwo Mpiani.

However, in a swift rebuttal, Mr Mensah-Bonsu, another MP, said Mr Appiah-Ofori’s claims could not be true. Mr. Mensah-Bonsu did accept that MPs sometimes received additional payments when the Parliament worked overtime, but couldn’t confirm if the Vodafone purchase debate was such an occasion.
